Athletic track certification processes, validity of certifications and renewals

CONICA: Everything you need to know when choosing an athletics track.
In the previous chapter we examined the different types of synthetic athletics track and their variants according to Chapter 3 of the World Athletics Track and Field Facilities Manual.
As we have already explained in earlier chapters, there is a difference between a product (or construction system in the case of tracks) certified by World Athletics and a Class 1 or Class 2 facility for holding events.
Everything about the certification processes used by World Athletics – IAAF is described in the book “Certification System Procedures”, last updated in March 2020 and available on the World Athletics website
Certification of synthetic surfaces for athletics tracks
Tests for the certification of synthetic surfaces for athletics tracks are performed in a laboratory accredited by World Athletics itself. Manufacturers must submit the necessary samples manufactured in accordance with the specifications in Chapter 3 of the World Athletics Track and Field Facilities Manual. Once the tests have been carried out the laboratory will, if necessary, inform the manufacturer of any recommendations regarding the performance or durability of the surface.
If the product/system meets all the criteria, the certificate is issued. World Athletics reserves the right to request up-to-date samples of each system from the manufacturer in order to verify that their properties remain consistent throughout the period of validity of the certificate. These certificates are valid for a maximum of four years from the date of issue. The certificate must be renewed before its expiry date, otherwise the product/system will be removed from the list of systems certified by World Athletics.
Certification of facilities for holding events
As we have already seen in earlier chapters of the World Athletics Track and Field Facilities Manual, there are different requirements for Class 1, Class 2 and Indoor facilities. In order to be certified, any of these facilities will of course need a synthetic surface certified by World Athletics. In addition, depending on whether it is a Class 1, Class 2 or Indoor facility it will need to meet a number of requirements and a series of reports will need to be produced in situ in each facility by a laboratory also certified by World Athletics. There is also a series of control procedures to assess the consistency of the tests carried out on site throughout the validity period of the certificate.
The duration of the certificates for the facilities will depend on the age of the synthetic surface when the first application is filed, but never exceeds a maximum period of five years. The older the surface, the shorter the time until the certificate needs to be renewed. Facilities with a synthetic surface older than eight years will not be able to have their certificates renewed, with some special exceptions authorised by World Athletics. Otherwise, the surface will at least require re-topping, which must also be certified.
Three basic concepts from this chapter:
- The certification procedures are described in “Certification System Procedures” published by World Athletics.
- Synthetic flooring systems need to be tested and approved for certification by World Athletics. Certificates are issued for a maximum of four years and can be renewed.
- Class 1, Class 2 or Indoor facilities require full certification by World Athletics with a maximum validity period of five years, which can then be renewed. After eight years the athletics track will at least need to be refurbished by re-topping in order to maintain the classification.
We hope that these publications that we have released over the last few months have helped to give you a clear idea of everything you need to consider when choosing flooring for your athletics track.
