Long life with Topcoat Sealers
28. June 2022
A few years after installing a wet pour rubber flooring, some EPDM or coated SBR colours may have lost their vividness and wear and tear may be visible with some granules crumbling, due to the loss of binder on the upper part of the top surface.
If the budget does not allow for re topping or for the full renovation of the surfe, a clever alternative is the use of our CONICA transparent or pigmented top coatings. The pigmented coatings allow to get your vivid colour back, as if the surface had been completely renewed.
Our sealing lacquers top coats are polyurethane-based, two-component and can be solvent or water-based, transparent or pigmented, have a matte or gloss finish and have added anti-slip additives or additives for increased hygiene should you require such treatments.
Each of them has its preferred use, this article is aiming to explain some of their main differences to make your choice easier.
Indoor applications
In this case it is preferable to use a water-based topcoat to reduce emission levels.
First, the pore sealer CONIPUR 4480 W (transparent) is applied to close the pores of the EPDM layer. As top coat, our type CONIPUR 3202 W is the best choice and is available in a transparent satin matte or pigmented finish in a range of colours with an optimum level of resistance to UV radiation.
Once the two components are mixed together, the mixture can be used for about 1 hour, it must be applied with a “Microtex” roller in two coats, following the instructions on the product’s technical sheet. The surface will be impermeable to water, which greatly facilitates the cleaning process.
Outdoor applications
The ideal sealing lacquers for these applications are mainly pigmented topcoat containing solvent with a satin finish. They have a good UV protection and at the same time they improve the wear resistance by also improving the adhesion of the granules. The cleaning and maintenance is facilitated and run-off is improved while improving the visual appearance of the surface.
Our type CONIPUR 2200 is resistant to sea water, brine and waste waters, and to a variety of alkaline substances, diluted acids, mineral oils, lubricants and fuels.
Should you also require anti-slip properties, the CONIPUR 2210 type adds some small particles to give it significant anti-skid improvements.
These top coats should be applied sprayed by using an airless spraying machine, in two coats, from opposite directions to ensure the granule is sealed from all sides.
The application by rolling is not recommended, as it is very difficult to obtain a homogeneous, optically appealing surface.
All these products can be used for approximately 1 hour after the two components of resin and hardener have been mixed.
After the application, the surface is ready for footsteps after 1 day, but a full curing requires roughly 5 days depending on the climatic conditions.
