Olympic Park Munich: Entire New Construction of the Sports Campus
5. August 2019
Conica Sports Floors Provide Secure Footing and Enable Top Performance
For EUR 143 million, the central university sports grounds of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Munich’s Olympic Park will be completely rebuilt. Completion is scheduled for 2022, 50 years after the Olympic Games. Around 150,000 students and university employees are among the users. The Swiss Conica Group ensures that the athletes find a secure footing on innovative sports floors and can call up top performances.
The sports ground in the Olympic Park is impressively large: eleven sports halls, 15 football pitches, seven beach volleyball courts, a climbing tower, a tennis court with 22 courts, a hockey and a golf practice facility have been spread over 34 hectares. This is a thing of the past. All the old buildings erected in 1971 were dilapidated and could no longer be renovated. The client, the Staatliche Bauamt München (Munich State Building Authority), is realising the new building with a space programme of 14 sports halls, 12 lecture theatres, 15 laboratories, 5 workshops and 300 offices. The landscape of the ensemble-protected Olympic Park should be as unspoilt as possible.

The construction project will be carried out by an architectural ARGE consisting of the two offices Dietrich Untertrifaller and Balliana Schubert Landschaftsarchitekten. It provides for a complex with six inner courtyards. This will consist mainly of wood and glass. The heart of the complex is a so-called „communication site“ from which one can look into all the sports halls. The urban development and landscape planning concept meet the multifunctional requirements of the users on the one hand and on the other hand creates a new, brilliant address for the TUM in the Olympic Park.
The high demands placed on landscape planning and architecture are also reflected in the sports facilities themselves. The sports floors were awarded to Wilms GmbH from Wiesentheid near Würzburg in a public tender at the beginning of 2019. The company specialises in laying sports floors and works with Conica products.
High-end solutions for sports floors from Switzerland
The Conica Group, based in Schaffhausen (Switzerland), has been developing innovative seamless flooring solutions based on polyurethane and epoxy resins for 40 years. Its areas of application are sports, games and technically decorative high-end solutions for industry, parking, trade, education and health facilities as well as residential construction. Conica is one of the global market leaders and innovation drivers. The user-oriented requirements in terms of technical and sports performance as well as suitability for use, guaranteeing health aspects of the material itself and for the user, set standards.
The following Conica sports floors will be used in the Olympic Park:
- In the equipment rooms, Conifloor LPC will be installed on around 695 m². This floor is suitable for technical areas, is low-emission (AgBB), bacteriostatic, flame-retardant, jointless, individually colour-coordinated, UV-resistant and non-slip (R10).
- Conifloor LPC-Li will be used on around 575 m² in the FIT Gallery, the weight training area. This floor is crack-bridging, impact sound absorbing on „liquid elastic layer“, low emission (AgBB), bacteriostatic, flame-retardant, jointless, individually coloured, UV-resistant and non-slip (R10).
- Around 3,200 m² of Conipur AE pure will be installed in the gymnasiums. This floor is low-emission (AgBB), bacteriostatic, flame-retardant, jointless, individually colour-coordinated, UV-resistant and very robust.
- Around 961 m² of Conipur Vmax are planned for the sprint track of athletics. This material has been tested by elite athletes and allows them to run faster, safer and more stable. The base cover has chemically enclosed air cells, is extremely joint-gentle, elastic, jointless, has a robust surface with increased mechanical wear resistance and very good sport functional properties. The exceptionally high mechanical properties of the top layer ensure maximum resistance and durability of the raceway – suitable for multifunctional use and events. This results in high quality throughout the entire life cycle. The cost-benefit is extremely sustainable.
